Rubinyan says Armenia lacks direct route to EU

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia currently has no railway or road connection to the European Union, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ruben Rubinyan said at the Yerevan Dialogue international forum.

Rubinyan, who also serves as Armenia’s special envoy for normalization with Turkey, spoke about external actors outside the region that can play a positive role, particularly in developing infrastructure and connectivity, according to Panorama.am.

“There are railways, roads, and infrastructure linking Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, but one vital link is missing—Armenia has no railway or road connection to the European Union,” he said.

At the same time, he noted that while Turkey is a neighbor of the South Caucasus, it is not part of the region, and the European Union is not physically present there either.

“The fact that today in Yerevan an Armenian, a Georgian, a Turkish, an Azerbaijani representative, and an EU representative are sitting together means we are planning something, discussing something, and moving in the right direction,” Rubinyan added.

Earlier, Turkey’s special envoy for normalization with Armenia, Serdar Kilic, who is also participating in the forum, said that the timeline for opening the Armenia–Turkey border has not yet been discussed.
