Lawyer blames opposition over constitutional vote

PanARMENIAN.Net - Lawyer Arsen Babayan said that if the government succeeds in putting constitutional amendments to a referendum, responsibility for that outcome will rest with the parliamentary opposition.

In a social media post, Babayan commented on recent statements made by opposition parties represented in parliament.

“The parliamentary opposition declared that, for the first time, the government no longer has the constitutional majority needed to amend the Constitution.

At the same time, it announced that it would take its parliamentary mandates and pursue a strategy combining parliamentary work with street protests.

Therefore, if the government manages, under any scenario, to put constitutional amendments to a referendum, that will be the direct responsibility and fault of the parliamentary opposition,” Babayan wrote.

Earlier, Strong Armenia alliance representative Narek Karapetyan said the election demonstrated that the Armenian people rejected the campaign against the Church, policies aimed at weakening national identity, plans to amend the Constitution, and proposals involving concessions at the expense of national interests.

“We have blocked Aliyev’s constitutional changes. For the first time in history, Pashinyan does not have a constitutional majority. For the first time, he has lost the confidence of the majority of the people,” Karapetyan said.
