EC issues forecast for €8.5m environment contract in post soviet states

PanARMENIAN.Net - The European Commission has published a forecast for an €8.5 million contract for Environmental Protection of International River Basins covering Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine.

According to enpi-info.eu, the contract description says regional problems in the water sector are related to shared rivers and seas which are interlinked, because the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea are the final recipients of the pollution loads of many major international river basins of the region. The project is included in the regional action aiming at protecting freshwater and marine environments in the wider Black Sea region.

The global objective of the project is to improve water quality in the transboundary river basin of the wider Black Sea region in view of reinforcement of the current actions in pollution reduction and water resource management.

The technical assistance will support the following: improved availability and quality of data on the biological, chemical and hydro-morphological status of the selected transboundary river basins including groundwater; improved design and implementation of the river basin management plans.

These project purposes will be pursued with a view to addressing the interlinked issues related to protection of freshwater and marine environments in the wider Black Sea region, and activities will therefore be closely coordinated with the second component of the regional action, the Environmental protection of the Black Sea project.
