Kars-based Monument to Humanity demolition suspended, Turkey short of money

PanARMENIAN.Net - Demolition of Kars-based Monument to Humanity, symbolizing Armenian-Turkish friendship was temporarily suspended.

Hurriyet Turkish newspaper cited non-payment of fees to workmen responsible for demolition as a reason behind suspension.

Out of 272 Turkish Liras allocated to demolition works, only 172 were paid out, according to newspaper report.

The demolition was planned to be completed by June 24. According to earlier reports, cheese and honey monument was to be erected instead of the Monument to Humanity. As the head of the local municipality Nevzat Bozkus said, Kars is known as a manufacturer of cheese and honey which may greatly contribute to the popularization of the province. “After the cost of the monument is assessed, a construction tender will be announced,” he said.
