The Israel Defense Forces said the strike was in response to attacks by Hamas against communities in southern Israel, including a rocket attack a day earlier that struck the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council and injured one woman. The defense forces said it targeted "a terror tunnel and a weapon manufacturing facility" used to target communities in southern Israel. "The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against the state of Israel," it said in a statement.
