258 HIV CARRIERS REGISTERED IN ARMENIAMarch 4, 2004 - 19:09 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - As of March 1, 2004, 258 HIV carriers are registered in Armenia, 246 of them being citizens of Armenia. Meanwhile, assessment of the situation shows that the actual number of those infected exceeds official data more than 10 times. According to the information of the Armenian Center for AIDS Prevention, AIDS is diagnosed to 50 out of those infected. Men prevail among the total number of the virus carriers - 79.3%, women make 20.3%. 3 cases of infection of children are also registered. Over 80% of the infected belong to the age group of 20-39. Cases, when infected parents bear children, are also known. Intravenous injection of drugs is the main way of transmission of HIV in Armenia - 51.7% and heterosexual relations - 39%. 37 lethal cases are registered among AIDS patients, 9 of them in 2002, 6 - last year.![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult.
