Armenia may recognize Karabakh's independence but it will not become a solution to the problem

PanARMENIAN.Net - Any time Armenia may recognize Nagorno Karabakh's independence, but it will not become a solution to the problem, NKR President Arkadi Ghukassian stated in his lecture at the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) State University in Yerevan July 3. He said, there is not a single political force in Armenia, which would oppose the independence of NKR, and if Yerevan and Stepanakert make a decision, Karabakh will be immediately recognized as a sovereign country.

Arkadi Ghukassian informed the students that in 1988 when the Karabakh movement was in its initial stages, Armenians of the Nagorno Karabakh autonomy wanted to leave the Azerbaijani SSR and join with the Armenian SSR. Then taking into account the fact that the Soviet Union 'collapsed' and Karabakh was on the verge of war, it was decided to choose the way of independence. That decision was a compromise -i.e., Karabakh will become neither a part of Azerbaijan nor Armenia. Such a decision was much more acceptable for the world community," Arkadi Ghukassian underlined. Besides, by this decision Stepanakert tried to relieve Armenia from additional difficulties and problems, he stressed.

"Why does Ilham Aliev want to assure the world that actually the conflict exists between Armenia and Azerbaijan and not Nagorno Karabakh? Because there is one more illusion in Baku as if Armenia is an aggressor, which has occupied Azerbaijani territories. Moreover, Azerbaijan hopes that the world community will use certain sanctions," the President of Nagorno Karabakh underlined. He said if Nagorno Karabakh joins the Armenia-Azerbaijan format of talks, Baku will become aggressor from the political viewpoint. "Nagorno Karabakh declared its independence in the result of the war imposed by Azerbaijan. It won the battle liberating his territories and plus seven more regions, which then were adjacent to NK. That's why now the status quo is the result of the aggression perpetrated by Azerbaijan," concluded Arkadi Ghukassian, IA Regnum reports.
