SWISS GOVERNMENT ADVISES PARLIAMENTARIANS TO ABSTAIN FROM PASSING RESOLUTION ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE FACT RECOGNITION

PanARMENIAN.Net - The government of Switzerland urges the parliament of the country not to pass the bill stipulating the recognition of the fact of the Armenian genocide in Ottoman Turkey. The document addressed to the lawmakers states the passing of the bill might "affect the Armenian-Turkish relations negatively". Meanwhile, Swiss foreign minister Joseph Deiss has recently stated the government will not interfere in the issue of the recognition of the Armenian genocide by the parliament. He has also expressed hope that the National Assembly's approval of the bill will not influence the bilateral relations of Turkey and Switzerland. The bill, developed by the deputy representing the Christian-Democratic party Jan-Clod Vudro, has been already supported by 115 out of 200 members of the Swiss parliament. This allows asserting that the resolution will be finally passed at the June session of the National Assembly. According to Jan-Clod Vudro, the bill completely conforms to the "Swiss humanistic traditions". It should be reminded, last year in December Swiss Geneva's canton government officially recognized the fact of the 1915 Armenian genocide.
