The image of Zvartnots is a shape-generating principle in the monumental architecture of Armenia. The exigent expediency to reconstitute the temple is prompted by its role in the structure of the Divine Revelations. The program of reconstituting the temple of Zvartnots has been developed on the basis of medieval building technique aimed at securing long life of the structures. Seismic resistance is provided through increasing the load-bearing capacity of the understructure. The existing stone elements of the temple are being intensively demolished by the environment. The new technologies enable using the old understructure for reconstituting a full-fledged new temple of Zvartnots.
The temple of Zvartnots has to be restored by the following reasons:
- to recreate the image of the unique relic of world architecture;
- to preserve from demolition the architectural material using the ancient stones during construction;
- the temple is to be restored in its place because the site of the temple is a sacral space;
- the temple has to be rehabilitated in order to improve and to describe the theory of applying the complex building technologies securing long life and seismic resistance of structures.
The method of restorative reconstruction will enable to optimally use the potential of medieval technologies for the longevity of ancient stone structures and their adaptation to the regional environment.
The present time is the deadline for a genuine restoration, since the technology of building structures using hewn stones is on the verge of extinction.
