3 Armenian boxers break through to European Championships semifinal
Review of June 3-10 sports events.
Boxing: 3 Armenian boxers – Hovhannes Davtyan, Hrachik Javakhyan and Arthur Khachatryan – broke through to the semifinal of the European Championships going on in Moscow, Russia. Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17KOs) won the battle of the unbeaten junior middleweights with a unanimous ten round decision over Joe Greene (22-1, 14KOs) to retain the NABF/NABO super welterweight titles. The official scores were 96-93, 96-93 and 98-91.

According to Carl Froch's promoter Mick Hennessy, the upcoming Super Six clash with Arthur Abraham is heading to Montreal on September 18. Froch had refused to fight Abraham in his backyard of Germany and Abraham was refusing to fight Froch in Nottingham. Hennessy told The Guardian, that Abraham-Froch was heading to the Canadian city. "Carl knows that he has to win to stay in the Super Six," Hennessy said.

WBC International, WBA and IBF International super bantamweight champion Arsen Martirosyan arrived in Armenia after his May 21 bout where he beat France’s Jeremy Parodi. Martirosyan said that his bout vs. Parodi was important for him, as he was fighting for a new title. “Jeremy is a young talented boxer. He was undefeated before that fight. But I managed to beat him and gain WBC International title,” Martirosyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. He added that he will fight for WBC title in Japan in December 2010. “I will start my trainings in Tsaghkadzor and will continue in England and Germany,” the boxer said.

Armenian Football Federation was represented by FFA President Ashot Mankyan, FFA deputy CEO Karen Dokhoyan and FFA National Teams department head Edgar Manukyan.

Chess: Levon Aronian (Armenia), Boris Gelfand (Israel), Leinier Dominguez (Cuba) and Paco Vallejo (Spain), gave a vibrant show during the 23rd Leon Rapid top tournament. After the drawing of lots, Levon Aronian scored a 2,5:1,5 victory over Leinier Dominguez while Boris Gelfand beat Paco Vallejo. In the final match, defeating Aronian 4:2, Gelfand won the tournament. *

FIDE international arbiter Armen Nikoghosyan is appointed as deputy chief arbiter at Chess Olympiad 2010 to be held in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, September 19-October 4.

Gymnastics: Olympic Champion Albert Azaryan’s Cup artistic gymnastics tournament kicked off in Yerevan, with 43 Armenian, Georgian and Iranian sportsmen participating. Sportsmen competed in overall gymnastics during the first tournament day. Vahan Stepanyan, Harutyun Merdinyan and Arthur Davtyan won medals.
