Michel Platini: Football Academy in Yerevan is special
Review of August 26 – September 2 sports events.
Football: Football Academy opened in Yerevan on September 1 with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and UEFA President Michel Platini participating in the ceremony. According to FFA President Ruben Hayrapetyan, the project cost $12 million of which $ 7 million 475 thousand was allocated by the UEFA and $400 thousand by FIFA. The territory of the Academy covers 13 thousand m2. It has 5 playing fields, 2 pools and several gyms. “UEFA built many academies in Europe but the one in Yerevan is special,” Mr. Platini noted.

Armenian halfback Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who plays for FC Metalurg, signed a 5-year contract with other Donetsk club – Shakhter. The transfer fee is $7,5 million.

Four matches were played in the 19th round of Armenia’s League 1, including the central match between FC Banants and FC Pyunik which ended 2:2. The top three has remained unchanged. FC Banants tops the standings with 45 points, followed by FC Pyunik (40 points) and FC Ulissses (39 points). FC Mika defeated FC Gandzasar 1:0, while FC Impulse and FC Shirak tied their match 2:2.

Chess: Armenian grandmaster Zaven Andriasyan has won Kalamaria Open, tying the last round game with Bulgaria’s Julian Radulski. Vahe Baghdasaryan and Aghasi Inants finished 17th and 55th respectively.

Levon Aronian (2783 points) is the 4th in the FIDE list of 100 best chess players. The top three are: Magnus Carlsen (2826 points), Veselin Topalov (2803 points) and Viswanathan Anand (2800 points).

In the women’s list, Lilit Mkrtchyan is the 21st with 2484 points.

Weightlifting: 10 Armenian weightlifters have qualified to represent Armenia at the World Championships in Antalya, Turkey from September 17-26.

The team of 4 women (Elen Grigoryan, Christine Petrosyan, Meline Daluzyan and Hripsime Khurshudyan) and 6 men (Tigran V. Martirosyan, Gevorg Davtyan, Tigran G. Martirosyan, Ara Khachatryan, Gevorg Poghosyan and Artur Babayan) will compete in various weight categories.

“All sportsmen are in good physical shape. Arakel Mirzoyan and Nazik Avdalyan have already recovered from injuries and started training,” President of the Weightlifting Federation of Armenia Samvel Khachatryan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

Handball: Armenian Prime Minister’s Handball Cup kicked off in Vanadzor, bringing together sportsmen from Armenia, Iran, Georgia and Belarus. President of Armenia’s Handball Federation Sargis Grigoryan believes that the tournament will help promote this kind of sports in the republic.

Boxing: Carl Froch dropped the super-middleweight belt to Mikkel Kessler in his last Super Six outing. But Kessler has been forced to withdraw from the tournament and vacate his crown - opening the door for the Cobra to redeem himself in Monaco on October 2.

"This fight with Abraham will be for the WBC title and will be a straight semi-final in the Super Six. It's good news for me," Froch said.

He is determined to beat Abraham to secure a place in the final against Andre Ward or current WBA champion Andre Dirrell.
