Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world. WHO estimates that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 without intervention. Each year on 4 February, WHO supports International Union Against Cancer to promote ways to ease the global burden of cancer. Preventing cancer and raising quality of life for cancer patients are recurring themes.

Cancer can’t be treated, yet it’s preventable, Armenian-American Health Center director Khachanush Hakobyan said. “At our Center, 80-100 patients are examined daily, with 30-40% of examinations purely prophylactic. However, this is the greatest of our achievements, which allowed us to save 2800 lives,” she stressed. The cost of mammography examination at Armenian-American Health Center is AMD 11 000, uterus canal examination costs AMD 4 000. Special category patients (disabled, mothers of large families) are examined free-of-charge.

Over 213 669 patients were examined at the Center in the course of 13 years. About 6 500 patients were diagnosed with malignant breast cancer. 43 women out of 29 153 examined were diagnosed with cervical cancer, with precancerous condition detected in 131 patients.
