No political coverage in newspapers on election silence day - paper

On May 5, newspapers will be published with no political articles, Yerkir paper says.

During the silence day preceding the May 6 parliamentary elections, they may cover events in sports, culture, science and education, but never the domestic political situation.

Member of Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission Georgi Martirosyan told Yerkir that political topics are banned this day, irrespective of the timing; it does not matter whether the coverage refers to a recent campaign event or something occurring a month ago.

If any publications reveal propaganda or anti-propaganda items, the media will be fined by Article 401 of the Administrative Code of Armenia.

The fine will amount to 500-700 minimum salaries (AMD 500000-700000), Yerkir reported.
