May 18 celebrates International Museum Day

The worldwide community of museums celebrates the 35th anniversary of International Museum Day on May 18.

Every year since 1977, International Museum Day is held worldwide sometime around May 18. From America and Oceania to Europe, Asia and Africa, International Museum Day aims to raise public awareness of the role of museums in developing society.

This year's theme is "New Challenges, New Inspirations."

“Today, the world is changing faster than ever. New technology delivers new ideas, gigabytes of information, news of an increasingly unstable climate.” The International Council of Museums (ICOM) said in statement published on this occasion.

ICOM also urges people to visit their national museums on this day as “International Museum Day will to allow discover and rediscover how museums are looking to the future in terms of sustainable development.”
