UN Security Council to discuss possible Syria sanctions

The UN Security Council will discuss possible sanctions against Syria if it fails to carry out the peace plan of UN-Arab League envoy on Syria, Kofi Annan, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said on Tuesday, June 26, according to RIA Novosti.

“We want to beef up Annan’s plan by linking it to Chapter 7 [of the UN Charter],” he said. “We are in constant contact with our partners in the Security Council to ensure a vote for a resolution to that effect.”

Security Council consultations will be held within that framework later on Tuesday, Valero added.

Annan said on Friday it was "time for countries of influence to raise the level of pressure" on both the Syrian opposition and Assad, to end the spiraling violence there that the UN says has claimed more than 12,000 lives since March 2011.
