Iranian Foreign Minister reportedly detained in Nicosia

Several Turkish newspapers are reporting that Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi was briefly detained when he arrived at Nicosia International Airport because he was believed to be on the EU’s list of ‘unwanted persons’.

He was released after Cypriot Foreign Minister Sharly, who had invited the Iranian Foreign Minister, intervened, according to Daily Kos.

Foreign Minister Salehi had flown to Cyprus to hold talks with Cypriot President Christofias and the Cypriot Foreign Minister to discuss improving trade and economic relations between the two countries and the possible improvement of EU-Iranian relations after Cyprus, which has good relations with Iran, assumes the EU Presidency on July 1st.

Cypriot newspapers report that the meetings were held as scheduled.
