EU has economic leverage on Baku – Polish politician

European Council president Herman Van Rompuy paid just a ceremonial visit to South Caucasus, which can hardly be viewed as a large-scale geopolitical project in the region, a Polish politician said.

“The visit meant to promote the Association Agreement talks and visa facilitation, however it was not aimed to tear Armenia off Russia,” Mateusz Piskorski told PanARMENIAN.Net.

“Russia and the United States are the current geopolitical actors in Armenia and the European Union doesn’t have any ambitions or means to change the situation. Meanwhile, the EU believes it’s capable to help resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh talks,” he said.

Piskorski presumed that during the visit to Azerbaijan, Mr. Van Rompuy will be critical of the recent ceasefire violations, as the EU “has economic leverage on Baku.”
