Expert says Artsakh elections key concept of state-building

Armenian political analyst Alexander Markarov points out three key points in recent presidential elections in Artsakh Republic.

The expert named conduction of democratic polls, formation of opposition and legitimization of state system as the three key points.

“Formation of opposition is quite an important step for any country in the political context. The significant number of votes the opposition candidate garnered testifies to the opposition formation,” the expert said.

According to preliminary results of the Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) Republic’s Central Election Commission, the incumbent leader, Bako Sahakyan, gained 47 085 (66,7%) of the votes to win the presidential race.

His major rival Vitaly Balasanyan garnered 22 966 (32,5%) of votes while Arkady Soghomonyan received 594 (0,8%) of votes.
