Expert says Syrian Armenians’ problem nationwide issue

Armenians in Syria represent a very organized community, the absence of illegal measures against them serving a bright proof, orientalist Armen Petrosyan said.

“The community has maintained a neutral stance and only strives for peace in the country,” the expert said, characterizing the inflow of Syrian Armenians as a special case rather than migration.

“Many countries have expressed readiness to establish representations in the Middle East. Currently 60 000 Armenians reside in Syria, and every measure should be taken to avert their scattering all over the world,” Mr. Poghosyan said.

“Delegates, having arrived in Syria from Armenia, met with Armenian community representatives. President Serzh Sargsyan’s brother Levon Sargsyan, who previously served as RA ambassador to Syria, also departed for the country a few days ago,” the expert said, stressing the need to offer the community financial assistance, besides the moral and psychological support.

“The problem concerns Armenians worldwide in the face of the threat to security of the given community,”
