Cannes-screened “Paperboy” trailer features Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman

"The Paperboy" was the focus of intense critical attention, positive and negative, at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, The Wrap said.

Now, with the trailer out, viewers can get an inkling of where they might stand on this crucial cinematic matter.

From director Lee Daniels -- best known for 2009's "Precious" -- "The Paperboy" follows young reporter Jack Jansen (Zac Efron) as he looks into a case involving death-row inmate Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack). Then, trouble and temptation follows suit in the form of the inmate's Southern belle fiancée, Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman).

The film also stars leading-man-of-the-moment Matthew McConaughey, and of course there's the now-notorious scene in which Kidman applies a natural remedy to Efron's jellyfish sting.

Perhaps not a film for everyone, TheWrap's own Steve Pond summed up the critical divide on "The Paperboy," pronouncing that the film is either "a camp classic that will delight audiences at midnight screenings for years to come" or "a ludicrous hunk of oversexed claptrap that will be hooted off every screen on which it dares appear."
