Ousted Egyptian President Mubarak goes on hunger strike in prison

Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who is serving a life sentence in Cairo's Tora Prison, is staging a hunger strike and refuses to accept medical treatment, Ynet News reported citing Egyptian media outlets.

According to the reports, 84-year-old Mubarak demanded that the prison authorities allow his personal physician to visit him in jail. The ousted President also refused to receive treatment or medication from the prison staff.

Mubarak's son, Gamal, was reportedly asked to intervene, and managed to convince his father to receive treatment and eat. Meanwhile, Mubarak's wife and daughters-in-law continue to visit him regularly in prison.

Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison over involvement in the killing of 850 protesters during January and February 2011. He was acquitted on charges of corruption.
