Dutch police seize 8 tons of cocaine hidden under bananas

In port city Antwerp, Belgium, more than eight tons of cocaine, with a street value of over half a billion dollars, were discovered by police officials, CBS reported.

The drugs, nearly 7,000 packages, destined for the Netherlands, were hidden under a load of bananas aboard a freighter from Ecuador.

The police followed the transport from Antwerp to the Dutch port city of Rotterdam and arrested five people when they, a Belgian driver and four people from Rotterdam, began to unload, They were all arraigned Friday afternoon at the magistrate in Rotterdam.

The bananas, which served as a cover, were also seized and have been given to Rotterdam's Blijdorp Zoo.
