Expert: Armenian, Russian stance on Syria similar

The West’s plans regarding Syria failed in some respect, Armenian political analyst said.

As Sergey Shakaryants noted, Syrian President Bashar Assad is likely to become one of the most influential leaders of the region unless Russia weakens its influence.

“Armenian and Russian interests fully coincide on Syrian issue,” the expert said, stressing the need for Russia to intensify efforts to avert Syria’s destruction.

Expert Harutyun Mesropyan, however, voiced disagreement with Mr. Shakaryants’s viewpoint, noting the gradual decreasing number of Syrian Armenians as an important factor.

In this context, the expert stressed Turkey’s aspiration to become a superpower in the region.
