Pacific island-bound A340 makes emergency landing in Russia

An Airbus A340 passenger jet on a flight from Paris to the Pacific island territory of New Caledonia made an emergency landing at the airport in the Far Eastern Russian city of Khabarovsk on Saturday, Nov 10, due to a problem with one of the plane’s four engines, RIA Novosti reported citing a source.

“The A340 landed safely at 1:10 pm local time,” the source said.

None of the 242 passengers or 14 crew members aboard the wide-body jet was injured in the incident.

The pilots decided to make an emergency landing after receiving a signal of a fire in one of the engines.

Airport officials on the ground in Khabarovsk activated a 54-strong emergency response crew to assist with evacuating passengers and fighting any fires, but the plane landed without incident.
