Official: Armenia has still time to choose between EU and EAU

First Counselor of EU Delegation to Armenia has deemed the Eurasian Union (EAU) as an attempt to restore the Soviet union.

As Onno Simons noted at a seminar on “Armenia’s EU Integration”, Yerevan has still time to decide on which institution will favor its interests more.

“2012 celebrated the 20th anniversary of establishment of Armenia-EU relations, with the idea to form a Eurasian Union first voiced in 1989,” he said.

“I’m confident that Armenia is ready to develop ties with the EAU, but the policy RA government currently pursues is more inclined to bring the country closer to EU. Though President Serzh Sargsyan made a clear statement that Armenia’s place is in the EU, other options remain open,” Mr. Simons said.

He further noted that much depends on Armenia’s readiness to adopt EU values.
