Len Wiseman has revealed that his intended reboot of The Mummy will be "shockingly different" to previous films in the series, Digital Spy said.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the director of the recent Total Recall remake clarified: "I'm involved right now and the script is in the process of being written so I'm excited to see what it turns into… it is set in the modern day [and] it's an entirely different kind of Mummy.

"It doesn't tie in any way to the Brendan Fraser movies - it's not a remake at all," he added, drawing a line under the financially successful trilogy which started with 1999's The Mummy and concluded with the critically lampooned The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.

Wiseman also confirmed that the writing duo behind JJ Abrams's Star Trek reboot and forthcoming sequel are spearheading the new creative direction. "The pitch that Alex Kurtzman and Bob [Orci] presented to me was shockingly different," he said. "It wasn't something that I would immediately be interested in, but their pitch - it was shocking how new and interesting it was."

As for when production might commence, the Underworld helmer was unsure if it would even be his next project: "I don't necessarily know if it's next or when the script will be ready, but it's something I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how it develops."
