Mozilla has announced two new smartphones that will run its mobile operating system, the Firefox OS, Digital Spy said.

The community web browser giant is releasing the Firefox OS developer preview phones to encourage third parties to "bring the power of the web to mobile".

The phones - known as Keon and Peak - are being developed by Spanish firm Geeksphone in partnership with Telefonica, the owner of mobile network O2.

Mozilla expects the phones to be available to developers in February, ahead of a full launch.

The Keon handset has a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1Ghz CPU with 512MB of RAM, 3-megapixel camera, 1580 mAh battery and microSD card slot.

At the higher end, the Peak has a 4.3-inch qHD IPS Multitouch screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.2Ghz processor with 512MB of RAM, 8MP rear camera and 2MP front camera, and 1800 mAh battery.

Mozilla says that the Firefox OS differs from rival systems as it will "make the mobile web more accessible to more people".

Developed by a community of volunteers, the Firefox web browser is made available as an open-source project, meaning the code can be modified by others for delivering a range of services.
