The people of Nagorno Karabakh should be those to decide on their political status, Armenian President said.

“This is a classic case of a struggle for a right to self-determination, and there’s no argument that could demonstrate why Artsakh people should be denied that right,” Serzh Sargsyan told Russia’s Kommersant daily.

The Armenian leader further stressed the importance of strengthening international mechanisms for effective armament control. “A non-permanent member of UN Security Council, Azerbaijan has virtually unleashed an arms race, openly violating its obligations under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe,” the President said.

“We’ll continue talks with Azerbaijan. However, a breakthrough under the circumstances doesn’t seem feasible. Those, trying to tackle the issue in Moscow, Washington and Paris (the capitals of OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing counties) are well aware who’s to blame for failure to find a solution. They remember who foiled negotiations in Key West and Kazan and realize that control over Karabakh self-defense forces is not what lies at the heart of the problem,” the Armenian leader concluded.
