MEP hopes for restoration of Armenian-Hungarian relations

European Parliament member, Hungarian politician and member of ICES observation mission for the Armenian presidential election Zita Gurmai condemns the decision of the Hungarian government to extradite axe-murderer Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan and hopes that the results of the 2014 parliamentary elections in her country will provide an opportunity to mend the relations between Yerevan and Budapest.

As for the current election campaign in Armenia, MEP Gurmai said the ICES’s assessment is positive on the whole.

“As to prevention of possible violations, measures have been taken for holding the elections at the highest level,” she said.

Ms. Gurmai noted that the voters’ lists were published early enough and the citizens could check them in case of necessity.

According to her, the election campaign proceeded in a normal atmosphere, except for the shooting of presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan.

“Since the boards installed across Armenia for the candidates’ agitating materials remained empty, we can conclude that the current process more resembles reelection of the incumbent president rather than the agitation campaign as it is,” Ms. Gurmai said.
