Turkish foreign ministry has briefed Azerbaijan on its position with regard to Turkish President Abdullah Gul’s congratulation sent to Armenian leader Serzh Sargsyan after his reelection.

“The congratulations addressed to President Serzh Sargsyan on reelection are consistent with our state traditions. The congratulation was issued as it is usually done following announcement of voting results in other countries as well,” Turkish foreign ministry’s statement reads in response to APA’s question whether “Turkish President Abdullah Gül’s congratulation addressed to Serzh Sargsyan before the official announcement of voting results is in line with Turkish diplomatic traditions.”

“Turkey recognized the independence of Armenia on Dec 16, 1991. The issue should be considered in the framework of international rules of politeness,” Turkish Foreign ministry’s statement reads.
