IAEA team reviewing Fukushima cleanup process

A UN nuclear watchdog team is reviewing the cleanup process at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, where leaks and power cuts have eroded public confidence in the process, The Associated Press reported.

Juan Carlos Lentijo, leader of the 12-member IAEA mission, met Monday, April 15 with officials from the Japanese government and operator Tokyo Electric Power Company in Tokyo ahead of their on-site inspection of the plant, set to last from Wednesday through Friday.

Officials said the team will look into TEPCO's measures to solve leaks and blackouts that have caused cooling system failures.

After the inspection, the team will compile an independent assessment and give advice on how to proceed.
