Frida Kahlo exhibit at High Museum of Art Atlanta to close with farewell party

The High Museum of Art Atlanta exhibition “Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting,” featuring more than 120 works of two of Mexico’s most famous artists, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, closes Sunday, May 12, to make room for another major show. But before they go, the museum is planning a farewell party Saturday night that aims to capture the spirit of the artists.

“Frida & Diego” will be replaced by “Girl With a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritishuis,” which in addition to the masterpiece by Johannes Vermeer will be accompanied by works of Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen and Carel Fabritius, Global Atlanta reported.

“Girl With A Pearl Earring” is to open at the High on June 23. Organized by the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in The Hague, the Netherlands, this exhibition has been on an international tour and currently is in San Francisco through June 2.

The “Frida & Diego’ exhibition came to be through a partnership with the Toronto-based Art Gallery of Ontario and Mexico City’s Museo Dolores Olmedo, the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection of Mexican Art and Galeria Arvil.

An estimated 120,000 visitors came to see “Frida & Diego” and the accompanying photography exhibit since they opened on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. The photograph exhibit is to close on May 19.
