Sony rolls out its Xperia ZR with improved waterproofing

Sony has unveiled its Xperia ZR smartphone - a mid-range device with advanced waterproofing, Digital Spy said.

The 4.6-inch device, touted as a less expensive alternative to the flagship Xperia Z, is usable in depths of up to 1.5 metres.

Core hardware specs include a 1.5Ghz S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, Google's Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, LTE connectivity and the same 13-megapixel camera as the Xperia Z.

"The Xperia ZR pushes the boundaries on where and how consumers can use the full potential of their smartphone. By combining Sony's leading camera technology with the highest level of water-resistance, you will never miss another moment," said Sony marketing executive Calum MacDougall.

"Bringing together the best of Sony's leading technology, media applications and easy one-touch connectivity with the largest ever range of NFC-enabled accessories, the Xperia ZR delivers the unique smartphone experience that people can expect from Sony." The Sony Xperia ZR will be available later this quarter.
