Film Movement nabs “Ilo Ilo” Cannes Camera d’Or winner

Film Movement has acquired Ilo Ilo, the Anthony Chen-directed family drama that became the first Singaporean feature film to win a big prize at Cannes with the Camera d’Or, Deadline said.

Pic’s in Chinese, English and Tagalog with English subtitles, and it received a 15-minute standing ovation after its Cannes debut.

Set in Singapore during the beginning of the Asian financial crisis, Ilo Ilo chronicles the relationship between the Lim family and their newly arrived maid, Teresa. Like many other Filipino women, she has come to this city in search of a better life. Her presence in the family worsens their already strained relationship. Jiale, the young and troublesome son, starts to form a unique bond with Teresa, who soon becomes an unspoken part of the family.

Film Movement plans a New York theatrical opening early next year, with a limited national rollout to follow, as well as a day-and-date cable VOD premiere.
