Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson in "Defeat of Mister and Pete" trailer

"The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete" has dropped its first trailer via Fandango Movies, giving fans looks at two former "American Idol" contestants that are unintentionally paired in the drama co-produced by Alicia Keys. Despite having these three divas, the film is not a musical and, therefore, will only feature the two "Idol" alums showing off their pure acting skills, AceShowbiz said.

In the movie, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is introduced as a tattoed drug-addicted parent, who leaves her 14-year-old son Mister and his younger friend to fend for themselves over the summer after their moms are taken away by the authorities. Meanwhile, Jordin Sparks stars as Alice, who is seen asking Mister, "When's your mom coming home?"

The coming-of-age film, to be released on October 11 in the U.S., gets starrier with the presence of Anthony Mackie, who rocks beard and mohawk for his role as Kris. Taking the roles as the kids in the survival game are Skylan Brooks (Mister) and Ethan Dizon, the nine-year-old Pete.

To The Hollywood Reporter, director George Tillman Jr. revealed that the inclusion of Hudson and Sparks was a coincidence. "I didn't really realize that 'till later," he admitted, adding, "What I liked about it is they came not as singers or musicians, but they came as actresses supporting the story."
