Google buys smartwatch maker WIMM Labs

Google has emerged as the buyer behind smartwatch maker WIMM Labs.

The acquisition has only just come to light following an exclusive partnership declared on the company's website in 2012, Digital Spy reports citing Gigaom.

At the time, WIMM Labs said: "During the summer of 2012, WIMM Labs entered into an exclusive, confidential relationship for our technology and ceased sales of the Developer Preview Kit."

Google's exact use of WIMM Labs technology is unknown, but the majority of its staff now work in the Android team.

The company marketed itself as a manufacturer of wearables in general, meaning WIMM's technology could be used in Google Glass, as well as a smartwatch device of its own.

In May, it was reported that Google may use its Motorola subsidiary to build a smartwatch.
