Robert De Niro in Luc Besson's "The Family" red band trailer

The Family has debuted a red band trailer.

The video for Luc Besson's new film shows former mafia boss Fred Manzoni (Robert De Niro) settling down to write his unique memoir, Digital Spy said.

Based on Tonino Benacquista's book Badfellas, the film centres around a mob family who are taken into witness protection in Normandy.

The family struggles to conceal its true identity even in the idyllic rural setting.

"Under cover of darkness, an American family moves into a villa in Cholong-sur-Avre in Normandy. Fred Blake, the father, tells everyone he is there to write a history of the Allied landings. His wife Maggie gets involved in a local charity; their teenage children enrol in the lycee. At first glance a family like any other. But Fred’s real name is Giovanni Manzoni – an ex-Mafia boss who has grassed and is now part of the FBI’s witness-protection program. And his record in other locations would indicate that his cover is not likely to last very long," Benacquista’s source novel description says.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, Dianna Agron, John D'Leo and Domenick Lombardozzi will also star in the movie, which was formerly titled Malavita.

The Family will arrive in the US on September 20, and opens in the UK on November 8.
