Nikon unveils world's first waterproof, shockproof & freeze-proof camera

Nikon has announced the world's first waterproof, shockproof and freeze-proof interchangable lens camera.

As Digital Spy reveals, the Nikon 1 AW1 can resist drops from 2metres, is waterproof up to 15 metres and can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C as well as any dust buildup.

The company's new camera boasts 14.2 megapixels and has shooting speeds of up to 60fps, or 15fps with autofocus. The camera's CX-format CMOS sensor also means it has an ISO range of up to 4000.

Two new 1 NIKKOR AW lenses are also launching alongside the camera. They share the same resistance as the device itself.

Thuan Bui, product manager at Nikon UK, said: "We're pleased to expand the Nikon 1 range to include the AW 1 – a new model that combines the style, portability and high performance features synonymous with the Nikon 1 range, with the added benefit of all-weather protection.

"Whether you enjoy taking pictures of an active hobby or on your holidays, the water/shock/freeze-proof build means that photographers can concentrate on taking high-quality photos and movies rather than worrying about the safety of their camera."

Prices for the camera start at £749.99 (€899), whilst the 1 NIKKOR AW lenses can be bought for £299.99 (€359).

The Nikon 1 AW1 and its lenses will go on sale on October 10.
