Car bomb explodes near Swedish consulate in Benghazi

A car bomb has reportedly gone off outside the Swedish consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, badly damaging the building, the Associated Press reported.

A Libyan security official said no casualties were reported from the explosion. He said the car bomb was detonated by remote control on Friday, Oct 11, in the upscale neighborhood of Benghazi, which has been hit by a wave of attacks and targeted killings in recent months as security agencies struggle to secure Libya since the 2011 civil war.

Militants attacked the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi last year, killing the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

On Oct 2, a group of unidentified persons fired at the Russian embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. The attackers opened fire and tore the Russian flag. Embassy staff had been taken to the airport as a precaution.
