CineAsia to honor "The Grandmaster" star as actor extraordinaire

CineAsia has chosen its actor extraordinaire: Tony Leung Chiu Wai (In the Mood for Love, Infernal Affairs, The Grandmaster) will receive the honor at the convention's awards ceremony, to be held on Thursday, Dec. 12 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center, The Hollywood Reporter said.

"It is a great honor to be able to single out Tony Leung for his excellence in performance, most notably in The Grandmaster," stated Robert H. Sunshine, co-managing director of the convention. "His combination of continued critical acclaim and success at the box office makes him one of the most extraordinary actors of his time. He is considered to be the finest actor of his generation in Hong Kong."

Leung first made his name in television with number of comedy roles at TVB, including Police Cadet in 1984 alongside Lau Ching-Wan, Carina Lau and Maggie Cheung. He later won best supporting actor for People's Hero and My Heart is That Eternal Rose at the Hong Kong Film Awards, and appeared in films by other internationally renowned directors, such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s A City of Sadness, Tran Anh Hung’s Cyclo, Zhang Yimou’s Hero and Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution.

Throughout the early nineties, Leung starred Tom, Dick and Hairy, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Father, Dr. Mack and Heaven Can't Wait (1995), as well as in director Wong Kar-Wai's films: Chungking Express, Happy Together and In the Mood for Love, all of which landed him Best Actor awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards, with the latter earning him the best actor honor at the Cannes Film Festival. He also starred in two of Hong Kong's biggest hits ever, Infernal Affairs and Hero, landing a record fourth best actor win for Infernal Affairs and his sixth statuette overall.

Recently, Leung has appeared in The Wind Seeker, Red Cliff I and II by John Woo, Confession of Pain, 2046 and Soul Raiders.

CineAsia will take place from Dec. 10-12 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It will feature screenings of upcoming Hollywood films, sponsored events, timely and informative seminars, and the CineAsia Trade Show.
