General Motors Co. and its Chinese partner SAIC Motor Corp. will recall more than 1.46 million Buick and Chevrolet cars due to defective fuel-pump brackets, China's quality watchdog said Friday, Dec 27, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The affected cars were mainly produced between 2006 and 2011, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said, adding that the recall will start on Dec 30.

Shanghai General Motors Co., a 50-50 joint venture between GM and SAIC, will replace the defective brackets, which under extreme conditions will lead to fuel leaks.

The quality regulator said in a separate statement that Ford Motor Co. and its partner Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. will recall more than 80,000 Kuga sport-utility vehicles in China because of a problem with steering parts.

Ford's recall will start Feb 21, the regulator said, as it currently is short on inventory. A spokeswoman at Ford confirmed the recall, and declined to disclose costs, according to the Journal.
