Azerbaijan suspends gas supplies to Russia

Azerbaijan has cut off gas supplies to Russia for technical reasons, Russia’s state-run gas monopoly Gazprom said, and it is unknown when deliveries will resume, according to RIA Novosti.

A Gazprom representative told Prime business news agency that Azerbaijan, which had been supplying 3 million cubic meters of gas per day to Russia, halted deliveries on the morning of Jan 13.

Azerbaijan provided Russia with about 1.37 billion cubic meters of gas in 2013, according to estimates by Prime, down by 31.5 percent on the year before.

Russia first began importing natural gas from Azerbaijan’s state-run oil company SOCAR in January 2010 and agreed to a five-year extension of the deal later that year.
