CJ Entertainment joins Gaumont for Korean makeover of “Point Blank”

Backed by Korean powerhouse CJ Entertainment and France’s leading studio Gaumont Distribution, “The Target,” the Korean makeover of Fred Cavaye’s high-voltage action thriller “Point Blank” is getting ready to hit the market, Variety reported.

Korean star Ryu Seung-ryong, whose credits include local B.O. hit “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” and Lee Jin-uk, from the TV show “Nine: Nine Time Travels,” topline in “Target.”

CJ handles sales to Asian territories, while Gaumont reps the film in North America and Europe.

Pic chronicles the 36-hour chase of a reformed mercenary who’s been framed for the recent murder of a corporate leader and a young doctor desperate to rescue his kidnapped pregnant wife.

Helmed by Yoon Hong-seung (aka Chang), who previously directed IFC Films pickup “Death Bell,” the pic is produced by Yong Films, the shingle headed by vet producer Syd Lim (“Oldboy”), who founded the outfit in 2012, and VP T.J. Park (“Snowpiercer”).

Yohann Comte, deputy of sales at Gaumont, said “The Target” marks the first Korean redo of a Gallic movie. “A lot of remakes are signed and never get made but CJ and Yong Film have shown dedication from the first time they watched the original film three years ago.”

Describing the film, Lim said it was neither a traditional Korean thriller nor a Korean-European hybrid.

“Rather than a thriller, ‘The Target’ is more action and drama. I define a thriller as ‘a game of information’ and from my perspective, ‘The Target’ is a little far from it,” he said. “It focuses more on family and human relations, as well as the characters’ emotions, than the original.”

“Korean directors have always been a reference (point for me),” Cavaye said. “Therefore it’s an immense honor to see my film remade by a Korean director and prestigious producers like CJ and Yong Film.” The director’s latest feature, the action thriller “Mea Culpa,” came out in French theaters on Feb. 5 and will be released in various territories by Fox Intl.

“Point Blank” is also getting an English-language redo set up in the U.S.

“The Target” is expected to be delivered in May.
