Disney’s “Frozen” bearing down on $1 billion worldwide

“Frozen”, a box-office avalanche for Disney Animation, is bearing down on $1 billion worldwide, TheWrap said.

With another $18.2 million from abroad and $5.8 million domestically this weekend, it’s up to $955.7 million globally. That makes it the third-highest grossing animated movie ever, behind only “Toy Story 3” and “Despicable Me 2,” and the biggest original ever, counting just first-runs (“The Lion King” is still ahead at $987.5 million, but only if you include re-releases).

The tale of Anna and Elsa is still showing plenty of staying power and, with a March 15 opening in Japan yet to come, it has a good shot at hitting the billion-dollar milestone.

Its biggest foreign territory so far is Korea, where it has been No. 1 for five straight weeks and taken in $66.4 million. The U.K. is just behind, with $60.9 million, followed by Germany ($47 million), France ($42 million) and Russia ($33 million.

It dropped just three percent in its second week in China, where it has tallied $28.4 million so far.

And its U.S. total was off just 15 percent from last week – the best hold of any film in the marketplace.
