SPWA nabs Malin Akerman, Taissa Farmiga comedy “The Final Girls”

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) has pre-bought all worldwide rights on Groundswell Productions’ comedy “The Final Girls,” starring Malin Akerman and Taissa Farmiga.

Todd Strauss-Schulson will direct with Michael London producing alongside Janice Williams through his Groundswell Prods.

Described as a mix between “Back to the Future” and “Friday the 13th,” the story follows a girl grieving the loss of her mother, who was a scream queen in the 1980s. When she and her friends are mysteriously sucked into the world of her mother’s most famous horror movie, Max is reunited with her mom and must face the pic’s crazed killer.

M. A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller penned the script. The deal was brokered by Michael Helfand for SPWA and David Boyle for the producers.

Joe Matukewicz and Chan Phung will oversee the project for SPWA.

The pic was originally set up at New Line, but when the studio couldn’t get the project off the ground, London decided to shop it elsewhere, and Sony became its new home.

The movie starts shooting in April in Louisiana. Strauss-Schulson is best known for directing “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas”.

Akerman was last seen in “CBGB” as Debbie Harry; she also stars in the ABC show “Trophy Wife.” Farmiga was last seen in FX’s “American Horror Story: Coven.”
