Tribeca Film Fest shorts to feature Sophia Loren, Oscar winner “Helium”

The 2014 Tribeca Film Festival has lined up a hefty slate of 58 short films that span everything from recent Oscar winner “Helium” to a documentary about musician Amanda Palmer to an adaptation of a Jean Cocteau play starring Sophia Loren, Variety reported.

The lineup, including 29 world premieres, is divided thematically into nine programs, separated into five narrative sections, three docu slates and one collection of experimental shorts.

Anders Walter’s “Helium,” which scored the Academy Award for live-action short, is part of Flight Delays, a seven-film category about thwarted expectations and the need to escape, while the Loren starrer, Edoardo Ponti’s “Human Voice,” makes its world premiere as part of the Soul Survivors lineup. (Ponti won Tribeca’s 2013 award for short.) The project about Palmer and her relationship with the music industry, Ondi Timoner’s “Amanda F***ing Palmer on the Rocks,” is part of a documentary subsection called Before Long.

Among the other programs on tap are the New York-centric City Limits (comprising four world preems), doc slate After Words, experimental lineup Digital Dilemma and Totally Twisted, a collection of short pics that skew toward creepy, weird and funny. Thesps appearing in Tribeca’s 2014 lineup of shorts include Sally Hawkins, Danny DeVito and Alfie Allen (“Game of Thrones”).

The shorts join a festival slate of features announced in two parts last week. The 2014 Tribeca Film Festival runs April 16-27.
