Indie film darling Greta Gerwig will make her stage debut “The Village Bike,” stepping in for Maggie Gyllenhaal in the Off-Broadway production, TheWrap said.

Gyllenhaal dropped out of the show in February, citing scheduling conflicts related to her Broadway debut in next October's “The Real Thing.”

“The Village Bike” centers on a pregnant woman who tries and fails to get her husband's sexual attention. Her quest for satisfaction kicks off with the purchase of a used bike. Penelope Skinner (“Eigengrau”) wrote the play, which premiered in 2011 in London.

It will begin previews at New York's Lucille Lortel Theatre May 22, 2014 with an official opening on June 10, 2014.

It's a return to Gerwig's gritty (i.e. low-paying roots), after she stunned the world of social media this year by accepting a lead role in the “How I Met Your Mother” spin-off, “How I Met Your Dad.” That move was seen as a departure from her quirkier work with Noah Baumbach on “Greenberg” and “Frances Ha” and roles in “Damsels in Distress” and Barry Levinson's upcoming “The Humbling” opposite Al Pacino.
