Microblogging service Twitter announced that it is bringing real-time pop-up notifications to its website, The Inquirer reports.

It said it will roll out the feature to all users of Twitter.com "in the coming weeks", and promised it will make the website more engaging.

Twitter said in a blog post, "When it comes to your interactions on Twitter, it should be easy for you to stay connected to what's relevant. With this in mind, we're bringing you real-time notifications on twitter.com when someone is engaging with your tweets."

Users can receive pop-up notifications if a fellow tweeter replies to, favorites or retweets one of their tweets, and can also be notified when they receive a direct message or new follower.

These will be interactive, so users will be able to reply or follow somebody back from the pop-up notification box, which will appear in the right-hand corner of Twitter.com. The users will also be given a possibility to set who they want to see notifications from, too - be it any Twitter user or just people they follow.

"They're fully interactive, so that you can reply, favorite, retweet, and follow right from the notification," Twitter said.

Twitter will let the users pick which notifications they receive, and if they are not keen on receiving them, they can switch them off in settings.

"To make sure you're getting the notifications you want, go to your Settings on twitter.com. That's where you can choose what types of notifications you want to get on twitter.com and via email and mobile."
