Samsung will launch its competitor to Google Glass in September, according to a report, Digital Spy said.

Business Korea claims that the so-called 'Gear Glass' will be powered by a next-generation version of the firm's Tizen operating system.

The device previously emerged in a patent filing under the codename of Earphone, which could indicate that Samsung plans to include mobile phone functionality in the product.

Gear Glass is expected to consist of an earpiece with a heads-up display, with previous reports suggesting that it will be more powerful than Google Glass.

Samsung has been tipped to showcase the gadget at the IFA trade show in Berlin this September, but is yet to officially confirm its existence.

Google Glass went on sale in the US today (May 14), with a UK release date yet to be confirmed.
