Nicolas Cage to play disgraced congressman in “The Runner” thriller

Nicolas Cage, national treasure and “National Treasure” star, is going to Washington, D.C. And then getting booted after a sex scandal. The Oscar-winner, who is showing signs of a career revival, will star in “The Runner” a political thriller from producer Austin Stark (“Infinitely Polar Bear”), who is making his writing and directorial debut, TheWrap said.

The film, which takes place in the aftermath of the tragic 2010 BP oil spill, finds Cage as Colin Price, an idealistic but flawed New Orleans congressman who is forced to confront his dysfunctional life after his career is destroyed in a sex scandal.

“The Runner” will be produced by Benji Kohn, Bingo Gubelmann, and Chris Papavasiliou for Paper Street Films and Glenn Williamson for Back Lot Pictures; and executive produced by Ruth Mutch, Noah Millman, Sam Bisbee, Tom Conigliaro and Erika Hampson.
